Ted Kennedy Passes the Torch as His Flame Goes Out

Beloved and controversial senator Teddy Kennedy lost his battle with brain cancer and passed away at age 77. I have included the Liberal Lion's historic (and final) speech from the Democratic National Convention last November. When I re-watched it after hearing of his death, his words made me cry.

His speech was prophetic as he passed the torch to a new generation and continued his call for affordable health care for every American. The entire text is below as well as in the complete video above. Take special note of the last two paragraphs.

"My fellow Democrats, my fellow Americans, it is so wonderful to be here.

And nothing -- nothing is going to keep me away from this special gathering tonight.

I have come here tonight to stand with you to change America, to restore its future, to rise to our best ideals, and to elect Barack Obama president of the United States.

As I look ahead, I am strengthened by family and friendship. So many of you have been with me in the happiest days and the hardest days. Together we have known success and seen setbacks, victory and defeat.

But we have never lost our belief that we are all called to a better country and a newer world. And I pledge to you -- I pledge to you that I will be there next January on the floor of the United States Senate when we begin the great test.

Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you.

For me this is a season of hope -- new hope for a justice and fair prosperity for the many, and not just for the few -- new hope.

And this is the cause of my life -- new hope that we will break the old gridlock and guarantee that every American -- north, south, east, west, young, old -- will have decent, quality health care as a fundamental right and not a privilege.

We can meet these challenges with Barack Obama. Yes, we can, and finally, yes, we will.

Barack Obama will close the book on the old politics of race and gender and group against group and straight against gay.

And Barack Obama will be a commander in chief who understands that young Americans in uniform must never be committed to a mistake, but always for a mission worthy of their bravery.

We are told that Barack Obama believes too much in an America of high principle and bold endeavor, but when John Kennedy called of going to the moon, he didn't say it's too far to get there. We shouldn't even try.

Our people answered his call and rose to the challenge, and today an American flag still marks the surface of the moon.

Yes, we are all Americans. This is what we do. We reach the moon. We scale the heights. I know it. I've seen it. I've lived it.

And we can do it again.

There is a new wave of change all around us, and if we set our compass true, we will reach our destination -- not merely victory for our party, but renewal for our nation.

And this November the torch will be passed again to a new generation of Americans, so with Barack Obama and for you and for me, our country will be committed to his cause. The work begins anew. The hope rises again. And the dream lives on."

Beej Tackles Health Care Reform

What the eff is wrong with people? Here's a word of advice to the American people: please do not stand up at a townhall meetings and read word-for-word from email forwards that your crazy deacon's wife sent you.

If you want something to read, read the ACTUAL proposed legislation.

I do not comprehend in any way the opposition this bill is receiving. It's a reformation of the health insurance industry! NOT a government takeover of doctors' offices. It's not like Obama wants every doctor and nurse to be government employees, and they will be compensated with cups of rice and toilet paper squares. The more babies and old people they kill, the more rice and toilet paper they get!

The plan is to make health insurance affordable for every American. It will increase health care options, not take them away!

Why the Hilter comparisons? In no way whatsoever is a government-backed health insurance option similar to Nazi Germany's execution of 6 million innocent people because of their religious and ethnic heritage! Any parallels these whack-jobs are drawing that compare affordable health care to the holocaust are morally repugnant.

While I'm at it. Can someone explain to me when the religious-right began taking a position that opposes caring for the sick and the poor? Since when did Jesus start hating sick children? Am I reading the Bible wrong or did God change his mind about that one and forgot to tell me?

I thought God WANTED us to care for the sick and poor. (See Matthew 25:35-45.) I would very much appreciate it if God would sound out a press release if in fact he has recanted his views on the infirmed and impoverished.

How is cheaper insurance a bad thing? I do not understand the anger some people have about this issue. Surely I am not alone in my bewilderment. In the meantime. If you receive any emails with the letters "FW:" in front of the subject line, just assume their full of garbage. Now forward this article to ten people and an angel will grant you three wishes.

The Declaration of Independence

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. We Memember This Memorial Day

My grandmother was from the World War II generation, and she loved Memorial Day. It was to her like Christmas and birthdays were to other grandmothers.

She would take vacation time just to visit grave sites in other states. She took an immense joy in decorating and honoring the graves of those she loved and those who served in the armed forces. That same since of honor and solidarity is greatly missed in this generation.

Regardless of my personal views on the Iraq War, I salute each and every man and woman who has voluntarily handed themselves over for the sake of our country.

I say to them, "Thank you for your sacrifice. We honor your memory. May your lives not have been ended in vain. May we as a world learn the lesson your lives tried to teach us. And may the other soldiers be brought home safely and the conflict ended. Amen."

Please pray for the families who have lost fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers in the war against terror. While millions of Americans spend the day drinking beer and eating hot dogs, find a moment to say a prayer for peace.
